Albania plans to launch tender for first wind power plants in early 2021

By bne IntelliNews January 5, 2021

The Albanian government has annouced plans to launch its first tender for the construction of wind power plants in early 2021, said the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), which will support the project.

The wind park projects are intended to make a major contribution to improving the country’s future energy supply and significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The first wind power plants tender will diversify Albania's energy sources, increase its resilience to climate change and is expected to attract foreign investment.

The tender will be the first in a planned series of investments in wind energy projects and was supported by the EBRD with additional financial grant support of €650,000 provided by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), the statement said.

“We are delighted to expand our partnership with the Albanian authorities to start up the wind power sector, building on the successful experience with solar,” Matteo Colangeli, EBRD head of Albania, said at the end of December.

In 2020, the EBRD supported Albania's infrastructure ministry in launching tenders for the 140 MW Karavasta and the 100 MW Spitallë solar photovoltaic projects.
