Iran's Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali has called for disciplinary action against police officers involved in detaining Iranian students following a mass brawl near Kazan Federal University.

The Iranian ambassador stated on social media platform X on November 23 that such treatment of Iranian citizens "must be condemned" in a recorded video discussing the beatings with the consul general in the Republic of Tatarstan. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is personally monitoring the situation with Iranian students, Jalali added.

"Any inappropriate behaviour towards Iranian students and citizens is subject to condemnation, and Russian officials must be held accountable for such unfortunate events," Jalali wrote.

He added that the situation is being monitored "most seriously" while noting that "good results" had already been achieved in addressing the incident.

The confrontation occurred on November 22 outside the university's External Relations Department on Gvardeyskaya Street. According to the Interior Ministry, what began as an argument between two individuals escalated into a larger fight involving multiple students, prompting police intervention and several arrests.

"We inform all dear compatriots, especially students and Iranians living in Kazan; on Friday morning, a number of students studying at Kazan Federal University from different countries, including Uzbekistan, China, Iran, Turkmenistan, etc., were visiting the "Visa Extension Centre" of the said university to renew their student visas," the Iranian Consulate General in Kazan said in a communique, IRNA reported.

Following the arrest, dozens of Iranian students held a sit-in protest against the university and the city's police as tensions between foreign students and local officials continued.

The Investigative Committee of Tatarstan has opened a criminal case regarding violence against a law enforcement officer after one participant allegedly grabbed and pushed a police officer during the incident.

The diplomatic intervention highlights growing tensions over the treatment of Iranian students in Russia, even as both countries seek to strengthen bilateral ties amid international isolation.
