Kosovo reportedly heading for snap election on September 8

By bne IntelliNews July 22, 2019

Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci has decided that a snap election will be held on September 8, RTK reported quoting its sources.

Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj resigned on July 19 after being summoned to appear for questioning as a suspect by The Hague-based war crime court investigating crimes committed by the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) against Serbs during the war of independence.

Haradinaj submitted his resignation officially to the president on July 22.

"Today through a letter, I have informed the heads of institutions and the leaders of the political parties represented in the Assembly for the decision of my irrevocable resignation from the position of the prime minister," Haradinaj said.

He added that he will continue carrying out constitutional duties as prime minister until the election of the new government.

Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008 but is not recognised as a separate country by Belgrade. Pristina and Belgrade were engaged in EU-mediated talks to normalise their relations but they stalled after Haradinaj decided to impose 100% tariffs on Serbian products in November 2018 for political reasons.

As he is regarded as a hardliner, Haradinaj’s resignation may lead to the election of prime minister with a more flexible attitude to relations with neighbouring Serbia, which could eventually unblock the dialogue.
