The mass vaccination of the population against coronavirus (COVID-19) started in Albania on March 28.
The campaign started in the capital Tirana, where two large tents have been set up in the central Skanderbeg Square to serve as a mass vaccination point. From March 29, mass vaccination of the over-70s will be extended across the whole country, a government statement said.
Minister of Health Ogerta Manastirliu said the aim is to reach 10,000 vaccinations per day.
The main goal is to break the chain of infections as far as possible in order to have a better tourist season than last year, a government statement said.
"I believe that by May, we will have half a million Albanians vaccinated and I am fully convinced that we will move very quickly, as we have obtained significant quantities [of vaccines]. We continue to work to provide all the necessary quantities and I strongly believe that this tourist season will be greatly alleviated as a result of these shocks to the chain of infections," said Prime Minister Edi Rama.
Rama added that he hopes the entire population will be vaccinated by spring 2022.
