Tourism in Slovakia broke a record in August, when hotels and guesthouses reported 2.5mn overnight stays, the most since 2006 when the Slovak Statistical Office started reporting monthly data, the office reported on October 22.

The accommodation establishments posted almost 800,000 visitors, up by 17.7% year-on-year. The total number of overnight stays increased by 15.9% y/y. “Domestic visitors made up 59% of the total number of visitors, representing 466,600 persons and their number increased by 23.7%. The number of foreign visitors was 325,500, which was by 10.1% more than in August 2018,” the report read.

An increase in the number of visitors has been reported in all regions, a y/y growth by more than 15% was recorded in six regions. Domestic visitors mainly stayed in the Zilinský region which recorded a growth by 30% y/y and they spent almost 342,000 nights, up by 31.3% y/y. 

“It was followed by the Presovsky region, where almost 88,000 visitors stayed in August (up by 25.5% y/y) and the Banskobystricky region with almost 73,000 domestic visitors and a y/y growth by 29%,” according to the office. 

In 8M19, the tourism sector reported an increase of 12.9% y/y. The number of domestic visitors grew by 15.9% and foreign visitors by 8.6% y/y.
