Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a landmark investment of $5bn in Mexico, aimed at creating a digital hub in Querétaro. The initiative promises to generate over 7,000 jobs annually, train hundreds of thousands of workers, and inject $10bn into the nation's GDP over the next 15 years. This ambitious move highlights Mexico's growing role as a regional leader in technology and innovation.

The announcement was made by President Claudia Sheinbaum, who hailed the investment as a testament to the country's favourable conditions for global businesses. “This project goes beyond economic development; it’s a strategic commitment to fostering education, innovation, and opportunities for the Mexican people,” Sheinbaum remarked during a government briefing.

AWS, Amazon’s cloud computing division, has chosen Querétaro for its strategic location and strong infrastructure. The region's proximity to transportation hubs and access to talent played a pivotal role in the decision. “Mexico offers an unparalleled environment for growth,” stated Paula Bellizia, AWS Vice President for Latin America. “This investment reflects our long-term vision for Mexico as a key player in the global digital economy.”

The project includes the establishment of advanced data centres in Querétaro, which will serve clients across the Americas. These centres will not only bolster Mexico’s technological infrastructure but also create opportunities for businesses of all sizes to modernise and thrive. AWS has committed to forming alliances with local institutions, including Conalep and TecNM, to train an additional 200,000 individuals in 2025, adding to the 500,000 already trained since 2017.

Active customers in the country include major players like BBVA, Becle, Grupo Lala, Grupo Salinas, and the National Autonomous University of Mexico, among many others, showcasing the widespread adoption of AWS in driving innovation across industries.

Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of Economy, pointed out the broader economic implications of the project. "This is one of the most significant investments in our history," Ebrard stated. "It aligns with the broader objectives of the $277bn Mexico Plan, which aims to position our economy among the world’s top ten." He noted that this development complements other efforts to digitalise industries and enhance data management capabilities nationwide.

The launch of AWS operations in Mexico coincides with increasing global demand for artificial intelligence and cloud computing technologies. Bellizia highlighted that cloud-enabled AI could contribute an estimated $19bn to the nation's economy by 2030, with productivity gains of $900 per worker during the same period.

Beyond its economic benefits, the investment underscores Mexico's strategic importance in the global tech landscape. Bellizia affirmed, “From Mexico, we will not only serve local needs but also provide services to markets worldwide. This project positions the country as a critical digital node in Latin America.”

President Sheinbaum expressed gratitude to AWS for its confidence in Mexico, noting that the investment symbolises the country’s promising future. “This is a clear indication that Mexico is not only a land of opportunity today but also a beacon of potential for tomorrow,” she concluded.

This investment cements Mexico’s place as a regional technology leader, laying the groundwork for sustained economic growth and innovation.
