Event Overview

The Berlin Energy Forum is led by Ben Aris, Editor-in-Chief and Founder of IntelliNews, and Dr Tom O’Donnell, a nuclear scientist and Global Fellow of the Wilson Centre.

This forum will delve into the dynamics of Germany’s energy sector, focusing on the future role hydrogen will play in Germany’s energy mix.

Germany’s federal policy has increasingly turned towards green hydrogen (GrH2) as a cornerstone of its strategy to fully decarbonize and de-nuclearize the country.

Originally spearheaded by Chancellor Merkel’s last energy minister, Peter Altmaier, and now championed by Chancellor Scholz’s energy and economy minister, Robert Habeck, the policy is critical for sectors that are "hard to decarbonize" and for grid-scale storage solutions. The policy also addresses the replacement of coal and natural gas as baseload power sources and explores various transport applications.

Key Discussion Points

The forum will tackle the pressing questions, including:

  • Is GrH2 production and transport technically feasible?
  • What new infrastructure is required?
  • What are the costs and timelines for replacing coal and expanding natural-gas generation in Germany?
  • What are the greenhouse gas characteristics of GrH2?
  • Will projects in Eastern Europe, the Gulf, and Africa become “white elephants” once subsidies end?
  • Should renewable energy first decarbonize the countries where it is produced?
  • What are the competing solutions for overcoming the weather-induced limitations of renewable-based generation?
