Yoon Suk Yeol, the president of South Korea, has declared a state of martial law in the East Asian country.

The announcement was made in a sudden televised address to the nation. This was the first such declaration in the country since 1980.

Yoon, who heads the conservative People Power Party, spoke in the address of the need to protect the country from “the threat of North Korean communist forces” but did not mention any specific or immediate threats.

“I declare martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threat of North Korean communist forces, to eradicate the despicable pro-North Korean anti-state forces that are plundering the freedom and happiness of our people, and to protect the free constitutional order,” Yoon said in his address. He also spoke of eradicating “anti-state forces”.

The move comes amid rising political challenges for the president, a former prosecutor-general who was elected in 2022. Yoon campaigned on promises to tackle corruption, foster economic fairness and adopt a tougher stance against North Korea. His People Power Party suffered an election defeat earlier this year, leaving him in a weakened position.
