Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned on November 2 that the United States and Israel would face a crushing response.
85-year-old Khamenei's comments come as tensions escalate following Israel's October 26 strikes on Tehran, Ilam and Khuzestan provinces that killed four soldiers and a security guard. The attacks marked the first direct Israeli strikes on Iranian territory since the Iran-Iraq war.
"The enemies, both the US and the Zionist regime, should know they will definitely receive a teeth-breaking response for what they are doing against Iran and the resistance front," Khamenei told students in Tehran, adding this would be "a logical action aligned with religion, ethics, and the Sharia, in accordance with international regulations."
Speaking on the eve of Iran's annual commemoration of the 1979 US embassy takeover, Khamenei said Iran is strengthening its preparedness against "global arrogance."
Each year since the Iranian revolution on the 13th day of the Persian calendar month of Aban, supporters of the regime commemorate the event by staging rallies across the country and burning US and Israeli flags. Many Iranians, however, have since opted to avoid the events.
"We are certainly doing everything necessary to prepare the Iranian nation to stand against arrogance, whether in terms of military readiness, armaments, or political actions and thank God, our officials are currently engaged in this," he said.
The Iranian leader rejected claims that Iran-US tensions began with the embassy seizure, stating, "The Americans clashed with the Iranian nation from the very start of the Revolution, even from years before, doing everything they could against the Iranian nation."
He cited the 1953 CIA-orchestrated coup against Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddeq as evidence of longstanding US hostility.
"A national, popular government was in power in Iran, but the Americans entered the field, betraying the trust of a government that had naively trusted them," Khamenei said.
The speech comes as Iran weighs its response to Israel's recent strikes, which followed Tehran's October 1 missile and drone attack on Israeli territory.
"The Iranian people and the country's officials will not hesitate or neglect this course. Rest assured," Khamenei added.
The Iranian rial (IRR) on the black market reached 694000 against the US dollar on November 2 following Khamenei’s comments as traders fear an increasing escalatory move from the Iranian security services.
