Iran has shut down two centres affiliated with the German government in Tehran, citing legal violations and financial misconduct, according to Iranian judiciary news reports on August 20.

The closures were ordered by judicial authorities, the state-run Mizan news agency reported, without specifying the exact nature of the alleged offenses or identifying the centres involved.

"Two branches of illegal centres affiliated with the German government, which had committed numerous illegal acts in violation of the country's laws, were closed on Tuesday morning by order of a judicial authority," Mizan said.

The news agency added that reports of violations by other German-affiliated centres in Iran have been received, and investigations into these claims are ongoing.

Social media reports from Iran claim the situation in both centres saw scuffles between teachers and police after the buildings were stormed and emptied of their staff.

This move comes amid ongoing tensions between Iran and Western countries, including Germany, over various issues including Iran's nuclear program and human rights concerns.

The German embassy in Tehran has not yet commented on the closures. The Iranian foreign ministry was also unavailable for immediate comment.

The two centres, Goethe German Language Institute's office, and the German Cultural Centre have been operating in the Iranian capital for more than two decades and one of the few foreign government entities to previously operate.

Earlier in July, Germany banned the Islamic Centre Hamburg and subsidiary organisations for "pursuing radical Islamist goals", the German government said.

Germany claimed the Islamic Centre was directly controlled by the Ali Khamenei’s office in Tehran.
