Kuwait experienced a record-high electrical load of 17,360 megawatts (MW) at 2 p.m. local time on July 13, Kuwait Times reported.

This marks the highest level of electricity consumption in the nation's history as temperatures continue to rise in the region as worsening climate change challenges all Persian Gulf states.

This milestone comes shortly after the previous record set on July 11, when the country registered a consumption rate of 17,120 megawatts, with temperatures in Kuwait City hitting above 52 Celsius (125.6 degrees Fahrenheit).

According to the reports, despite the escalating demand for electricity, Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy currently does not plan to implement scheduled power cuts like neighbouring Iraq and Iran.

The Ministry of Electricity and Water anticipates further increases in consumption in the coming days, with temperatures forecast to exceed 50 degrees Celsius in some areas, local media reported.

Kuwait's Meteorological Centre predicts temperatures will reach 47 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

The Gulf state, with an estimated population of 4.8mn including about 3.3mn foreigners, has repeatedly urged citizens and expatriates to conserve energy to meet rising demand.

Authorities have bolstered electricity generation at Kuwait's power stations by 700 megawatts from the Gulf grid.

Last month, Kuwait introduced temporary rolling power cuts for the first time after more than 40 areas experienced outages due to increased electricity consumption driven by scorching temperatures.

The government continues to stress the importance of energy conservation as the heatwave persists.

Kuwait’s Minister of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Bushehri, mentioned that the country aims to increase the proportion of energy produced from renewable sources to 30% within the next decade, primarily from solar.

He made these remarks at the fifth session of the Arab Japanese Economic Forum held in Tokyo on July 10-11.

The minister also highlighted efforts to localise renewable energy technologies, creating new employment opportunities for Kuwaiti citizens.

According to the official, Kuwait is also focused on upgrading its infrastructure, technologies related to electricity grid security and management, and energy storage stations.
