The Apturi Covid (Stop Covid) coronavirus infection tracing app is the most popular in its field in Latvia, the app’s spokeswoman told local media on June 2.

Latvia and its neighbour Estonia were among the first countries to launch a tracing app based on a code developed by US tech giants Apple and Google. There is a debate under way in Europe over setting a standard for the apps so that they could work across borders.

Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems have all but monopolised smartphones globally. Countries like France expressed doubts, however, about handing the US tech companies fundamentals of the tracing effort in the EU.

Using smartphones to help trace coronavirus infections is considered one of the ways to curb the spread of the pandemic. Tracings apps, it is hoped, will allow identification and the quick isolating of people suspected of carrying the virus and the testing of those who might have been in contact with them.

Some 40,000 users have downloaded Stop Covid so far, the app project’s spokeswoman Elina Lidere said, according to The Baltic Times. The app has been available in Latvia since May 29.
