Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a strong condemnation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's recent remarks at the 79th United Nations General Assembly, where he asserted that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 completely resolves the issue of representation for Taiwan and all of China in the UN. The Taiwanese government firmly rebuffs this claim, underscoring the need for clarity regarding its international status.

In its response, the Ministry reiterated that the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People's Republic of China are separate entities, a fact recognised by the international community and a critical aspect of the current situation in the Taiwan Strait. 

Notably, the 2758 resolution does not mention Taiwan or confirm its status as part of the People's Republic of China, nor does it authorise Beijing to represent Taiwan in the United Nations. The Ministry emphasised that the resolution does not address Taiwan's representation issues, reaffirming that only Taiwan’s democratically elected government can represent the island in international organisations and forums.

The Taiwanese government called on China to cease misleading the international community and accused it of attempting to alter the status quo in the Taiwan Strait through its distorted interpretations of UN resolutions. Furthermore, Taiwan urged the global community to acknowledge China's harmful intent to establish a legal basis for future military actions against Taiwan, which could escalate regional tensions.

This exchange comes at a time when geopolitical dynamics in the region are increasingly fraught, with concerns about China's assertiveness in the Taiwan Strait growing among international observers. Taiwan's vocal rejection of Beijing's claims reflects its determination to assert its sovereignty and maintain its rights on the global stage.
