Iran and Azerbaijan are set to hold discussions in the near future regarding the reinstatement of the Azerbaijani diplomatic mission in Tehran months after it was suspended on January 29 following a shooting incident, resulting in the loss of the embassy's head of security and injury of two others, the IRGC-linked Fars News Agency reported October 2.

The statement was made by the official representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry Nasser Kanaani, in his daily presser.

“Plans for the visit of Azerbaijani officials to Iran are at the coordination stage, and I cannot yet tell you the exact date. However, I assure you that we have serious issues on our agenda, such as the resumption of the work of the Azerbaijani Embassy and developments in the South Caucasus," he was quoted as saying.

“The return of Azerbaijani diplomats to Tehran would be a good sign, and we hope that we will soon be able to see this happen.”

Relations between Baku and Tehran sharply deteriorated after the armed attack. After the incident, the Azerbaijani embassy suspended diplomatic activities, and most of its staff and their family members were evacuated to Azerbaijan.

There were only five people left at the diplomatic mission, who guarded the administrative building and property of the embassy but did not conduct diplomatic activities.

On October 1, the Azerbaijani state television channel AzTV announced that the criminal who committed the attack was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court of Iran.

Tehran has not yet commented on this information.
