Russia has granted asylum to toppled President of Syria Bashar al-Assad and he has arrived in Moscow together with his family, TASS and state-controlled RIA Novosti report. On December 8 armed Syrian opposition fighters entered Damascus and Bashar al-Assad reportedly fled the country's capital by plane.

The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Assad, after talks with “a number of participants in the armed conflict on the territory of Syria,” had decided to resign from the presidency and had left the country.

“Syrian President [Bashar al-] Assad with members of his family arrived in Moscow. Russia, based on humanitarian considerations, has granted them asylum,” unnamed diplomatic sources told the agencies.

The sources also claimed that the leaders of the armed Syrian insurgency guaranteed Russia the security of military bases and diplomatic institutions in Syria and that “Moscow hopes for the continuation of political dialogue for the sake of the interests of the Syrian people and the development of bilateral relations between Russia and Syria”.

“Russia has always been in favour of finding a political solution to the Syrian crisis. We proceed from the need to resume negotiations under the auspices of the UN,” the unnamed diplomat said.
