Hungarian no-frills airline Wizz Air plans to add 4,600 pilots to its staff by 2030 and has already started recruitment, the company announced on August 6

Wizz Air has trained 150 new pilots this year and wants to increase the number by more than 300 by year-end in order to operate at pre-crisis capacity and reach 2021 targets, the airline said.

The pilots joining Wizz Air will fly Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft on more than 800 routes between 191 destinations in 49 countries.

Wizz Air is also taking applications for flight attendants at all 43 of its bases.

CEE’s leading low-fare carrier reported a first-quarter loss of €114.4m in its business year started April.

Revenue climbed 119% y/y to €199mn as passenger numbers rose 318% to 2.95mn.

Load factor increased 8.1pp to 63.6% as Wizz Air operated at 33% of available capacity amid mobility restrictions due to the pandemic.

Cash flow was positive and the airline's liquidity balance stood at €1.7bn, including €1.5bn in free cash.

CEO Jozsef Varadi said the business environment "remained challenging", but flagged a recovery during the summer high season.

Wizz Air expects to operate at around 90-100% of its 2019 capacity in July and August, making it the first major European airline to fully recover capacity to pre-COVID-19 levels," Varadi noted.
