Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who resigned in the afternoon of August 5 after weeks of protests, is expected to fly to London, transiting through New Delhi, according to Indian media reports. Hasina’s flight is expected to land around 5 pm India time.

Analysts in India suggest that Hasina may not stay long on Indian soil to prevent any anti-India sentiment from flaring up in neighbouring Bangladesh.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh national television broadcast images of thousands of people breaking into the prime minister’s official residence. Hasina was seen boarding a military helicopter with her sister. Indian media reports further indicate that she initially reached Agartala, the capital city of the northeastern Indian state of Tripura.

In response to the situation, the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has issued a 'high alert' to all units along the 4,096-km India-Bangladesh border. The BSF Director General has since arrived in Kolkata.

"In view of the law and order situation in Bangladesh, BSF issues high alert along the India-Bangladesh border. BSF DG has also reached Kolkata," stated a BSF officer on X, formerly Twitter.

India and Hasina’s Awami League have long maintained close relations. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Hasina have worked diligently over the past few years to strengthen ties between the two nations.

Bangladesh, however, has a history of military coups. Hasina's father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and her siblings were killed by the military in 1975, a fact the now ousted prime minister frequently refers to.
