Consumer prices in Bosnia & Herzegovina increased by 1.3% year on year in August, after growing by 1.9% y/y in July, the country’s statistics office reported on September 25 (chart). In monthly terms, the CPI ticked up 0.5% in August, after staying flat a month earlier.

Inflation in Bosnia has slowed down significantly, which has boosted the retail trade and tourism. The EC expects 2024 inflation to reach 2.2%, while next year consumer prices should rise by 2%. In 2024 and 2025, inflation will be affected mainly by slowing price increases for imported commodities, such as energy. On the other hand, recent high gross wage growth, at 14% in 2023, might create upward pressure for headline inflation.

Consumer prices in the country increased the most in the following sectors: restaurants and hotels (+7.6% y/y), other goods and services (+4.6% y/y), alcoholic beverages and tobacco (+4.5% y/y), healthcare (3.6% y/y) and recreation and culture (+2.8% y/y).

The clothing sector decreased by 7.6% y/y in August, while transport sector moved down by 1.9% y/y.

In the first eight months of 2024, consumer prices increased by 1.9% y/y.

In 2023, consumer prices rose by 6.1% y/y.
