Ghana appoints caretaker team for Bogoso-Prestea gold mines after lease termination

By bne IntelliNews September 25, 2024

Ghana’s Minerals Commission has appointed a six-member caretaker team to oversee operations at the Bogoso and Prestea gold mines following the termination of mining leases held by FGR Bogoso Prestea Limited, authorities announced.

The government revoked the leases on September 18, citing a series of regulatory breaches identified by both the Minerals Commission and a Ministerial Committee review, reports Citi News

Lands Minister Samuel Abu Jinapor said the company was warned in August 2023 but failed to rectify its violations despite repeated notices.

"The mineral rights covering the Bogoso-Prestea Mine have reverted to the state," Martin Ayisi, CEO of the Minerals Commission, said in a statement. He added that the commission will manage the mines until a new investor is identified, while the appointed team will "oversee the day-to-day affairs of the mine site effective immediately."

The team includes senior officers and representatives of the workers’ union. Military personnel will remain on site to secure the assets, Ayisi confirmed in the Citi News report.

Blue Gold Bogoso Prestea Limited, which claims to be the new operator, disputes the decision and plans to challenge the termination.
