Slovenia had a population of 2,089,310 at the end of June 2019, or 8,400 more than on January 1, the statistics office said on October 29.

The number of Slovene citizens decreased by nearly 1,600 while the number of foreign citizens increased by 10,000 and reached 7.1% of the total population (148,189).

This makes Slovenia a rare example of a Southeast European country whose population is growing, as most of the region is experiencing a population decline driven mainly by mass emigration. Much of the immigration to Slovenia is from poorer fellow members of former Yugoslavia such as Bosnia & Herzegovina.

On July 1, 2019 the population of Slovenia consisted of 1,045,835 men and 1,043,475 women.

For the first time in more than 160 years of reliable data on the population of the present territory of Slovenia, men outnumbered women: there were on average 99.8 women per 100 men.
