Jindal Nuclear plans to build 18GWe of nuclear power generation capacity in India over the next two decades, various local media reported citing a company statement.

Jindal Nuclear, which is a part of the Naveen Jindal Group, and a 100% subsidiary of Jindal Renewables, said that the plan will include Bharat small reactors, small modular reactors and Gen-IV reactors. The company plans to own and operate the plants.

India is looking to develop at least 100GW of nuclear power by 2047, the Indian government revealed during the Union Budget 2025–26 presented last week when the Nuclear Energy Mission was unveiled.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her Union Budget speech said the government would establish a Nuclear Energy Mission worth INR200bn ($2.3bn) to support research and development of small modular reactors (SMRs).

State-owned power company NTPC has also announced plans to set up a wholly-owned subsidiary dedicated to nuclear power generation. The company wants to make nuclear power a vital source of baseload energy in the coming years and is also exploring SMR nuclear technology. NTPC at present has a joint venture with NPCIL, in which it holds a 49% stake.

India aims to cut its reliance on fossil fuels in the coming years and has identified nuclear power as an important component of its energy mix.
