Tesco Czech faces fine for selling products containing undeclared horsemeat

The Czech unit of UK retailer Tesco faces a fine of up to CZK 3mn (EUR 116,000) for selling beef lasagne containing undeclared horsemeat, Radio Prague reported. The state-run Agricultural and Food Inspection Authority (SZPI) has launched a probe into the case after in February tests detected undeclared horsemeat in lasagne labelled as beef.

The lasagne was made by Novaco but according to SZPI Tesco is responsible for the products it sells. Earlier this week Tesco withdrew from its Czech stores locally produced salami that also contained undeclared horsemeat.

So far tests in the Czech Republic have confirmed two more cases of products labelled as beef but containing horsemeat - meatballs produced for Swedish furniture retailer IKEA and burgers imported from Poland. The checks were triggered by a European-wide scandal that erupted in January in Ireland and the UK after some beef products were tested to have contained undeclared horsemeat.
