Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Washington for a two-day visit on February 13 2025. The trip, undertaken at Trump’s invitation, marks Modi’s first visit to the US since the beginning of Trump’s second term.
According to a report by Indian state owned DD News, upon his arrival, Modi was received by India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, along with senior American officials.
According to a report by The Indian Express, the much awaited meeting with Trump happened in the West wing lobby of the White House with the US president physically embracing Modi. Following their meeting the two leaders also jointly addressed the press with Modi coining MIGA - Make India Great Again, as his vision to strengthen the India-US relationship - taking inspiration from Trump’s campaign slogan Make America Great Again (MAGA).
Modi also revealed that during their discussions the two countries have decided to boost their bilateral trade to $500bn by 2030. According to press releases from India’s Press Information Bureau, earlier in the day, Modi met with Elon Musk to discuss opportunities for strengthening India-US collaboration in technology, artificial intelligence, space exploration, and sustainable energy.
The talks also focused on increasing cooperation in innovation, entrepreneurship, and governance. Musk, who heads the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), was accompanied by family members during the meeting. US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz also held discussions with Modi, covering the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
The agenda included defence cooperation, civil nuclear energy - particularly the development of small modular reactors - strategic technology collaboration, and counterterrorism measures. In the third meeting for the day, US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard met with Modi to review intelligence-sharing frameworks, with a focus on cybersecurity, counterterrorism, and emerging security threats. Additionally, Modi held talks with former DOGE co-head Ramaswamy, further strengthening ties with influential Indian-origin business leaders in the US.
