UK and US bomb Iran-backed rebel group in Yemen

The United States and the United Kingdom have executed a significant number of airstrikes against facilities associated with the Iran-supported Houthi rebel faction in Yemen on January 12.

The operation, involving a coalition of allied aircraft, naval vessels, and submarines, was conducted simultaneously during the night from the Red Sea after weeks of Houthi attacks on shipping lanes in the region.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, along with the US President, Joe Biden, have both publicly denounced the Houthi group for their aggressive tactics.

The group has been implicated in numerous attacks on international shipping vessels in the Red Sea. This strategic maritime corridor has gained even greater importance in the wake of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Reports indicate that the airstrikes resulted in significant explosions in several Yemeni urban centres, including Sanaa and Hodeidah.

The US military has confirmed the execution of 60 airstrikes targeting 16 sites that are believed to be integral to the Houthi's military capabilities.

The January 12 attack follows the initiation of "Operation Prosperity Guardian" by the United States three weeks prior, aimed at safeguarding international maritime routes in the Red Sea, which have been under threat from Houthi incursions.

In the UK, Rishi Sunak convened an urgent session of the cabinet late on January 11, amidst growing speculation about the UK's involvement in military strikes.

In response to the emerging details from this cabinet meeting, opposition members in the Parliament have demanded a reconvening of the legislative body to debate the UK's military actions prior to their commencement.

In a joint statement from Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand, South Korea, the UK and the US, the countries, along with 44 in total, are unanimous in condemning Houthi attacks on shipping.

“Despite this strong warning, attacks in the Red Sea have continued, including the launch of numerous missiles and one-way attack aerial vehicles against ships in the Red Sea on January 9, 2024, including US and UK vessels,” the announcement said.

“On January 10, 2024, the UN Security Council passed UNSCR 2722, which also condemned these attacks and demanded that they cease,” it added.
