Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Russia's Chechen Republic, has performed the Umrah pilgrimage in Mecca during an official visit to Saudi Arabia, his office announced on October 13.

Kadyrov, accompanied by a delegation of Chechen officials, visited Islam's holiest site as part of a trip that blends religious observance with regional diplomacy.

Umrah, a pilgrimage to Mecca that can be undertaken at any time of the year, is distinct from the annual Hajj pilgrimage and is seen as a highly spiritual journey for Muslims.

The Chechen leader described the experience of circumambulating the Kaaba and praying at the focal point of the Islamic world as deeply moving.

"These are truly special moments when we feel our hearts and minds being purified, bringing us closer to the Lord of the worlds," Kadyrov said in a statement. "May Allah grant every Muslim the opportunity to experience such feelings and sense the blessings of these holy places."

The delegation included several high-ranking Chechen officials and family members, among them Ali Kadyrov, the director general of the Akhmat sports club, and Adam Kadyrov, head of security for the Chechen leader.

Kadyrov also expressed gratitude to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) for the "high level of reception" during their visit.

The pilgrimage comes amidst ongoing efforts by Russian regions to maintain diplomatic and cultural ties with Muslim-majority nations, despite broader geopolitical tensions.
