Israel has conducted one of its largest air operations in history, striking more than 250 military targets across Syria over the past 48 hours following the collapse of President Bashar al-Assad's government, Israeli military radio Galei Tzahal reported on December 9.

The widespread operations targeted military bases, aircraft squadrons, missile storage facilities, and scientific research centres throughout Syria, marking an unprecedented escalation in Israel's military engagement in the region.

According to Lebanese-based Al Mayadeen news network, Israeli forces conducted simultaneous strikes on multiple strategic locations, including the destruction of helicopter facilities at Aqraba airfield near Damascus, electronic warfare installations near Al-Bahdaliye, and scientific research centres in Barzeh, Jamraya, and Masyaf.

The operation extended to Syria's northern regions, with strikes reported at Qamishli airport and the 54th Regiment in the Hasaka province, demonstrating the extensive geographical scope of the Israeli campaign.

"This is one of the largest offensive operations in Air Force history," Israel's military radio reported, citing military sources.

In Damascus and its surroundings, Israeli aircraft targeted multiple military installations, while strikes were also reported in the Homs region and along Syria's Mediterranean coast, including the port of Latakia.

The United Nations expressed concern over the escalation, with a spokesperson for the Secretary-General stating that recent activities in the Golan Heights region constitute a violation of the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking amid the ongoing operations, declared that the Golan Heights would remain permanently under Israeli control, signalling a hardened stance following the recent changes in Damascus.

The extensive military campaign comes as Syria's new opposition leadership works to establish control over the country's military assets and infrastructure, with the status of Syria's air defence systems and military capabilities unclear following the recent political upheaval.

Qatar, Iraq and Saudi Arabia have condemned Israel’s seizure of land in Syria near the occupied Golan Heights as the Israeli military continues to launch airstrikes across the country.

Qatar’s foreign ministry said that Doha views the Israeli incursion as “a dangerous development and a blatant attack on Syria’s sovereignty and unity, as well as a flagrant violation of international law.”
