President Anura Kumara Dissanayake convened a meeting with opposition party leaders in Colombo on April 10 to discuss the potential impact of recent US tariffs on Sri Lanka’s economy and explore proposals for engaging with the US government, according to a statement from the president’s media office.

The meeting was organised in response to a request by several opposition members of parliament, who stressed the importance of initiating dialogue on the issue.

During the discussion, the president presented the findings of a committee appointed to examine the implications of the US’s new reciprocal tariff system and to recommend a course of action for the government. Key concerns identified by the committee, along with proposals from opposition parties, were discussed in detail.

The talks also covered potential approaches for engaging with the United States and underscored the need for Sri Lanka to diversify its export markets to mitigate possible adverse effects.

The committee’s recommendations and the proposals raised at the meeting will be compiled for further review and follow-up action.

On April 9, US President Donald Trump announced a 90-day pause on the latest tariff increases for countries that have not retaliated, bringing the rate to 10%, except for China, which remains subject to a 125% tariff.
