The Post of Kosovo officially began operations in North Mitrovica, an area populated mainly by Serbs, on August 29.

This follows weeks of heightened tensions after Kosovo police shut down Serbian Post facilities in the Serb-majority northern region, sparking a new crisis between Belgrade and Pristina. Kosovan police claimed the Serbian postal facilities were operating without proper licensing, leading to their closure.

Kosovan Economy Minister Artane Rizvanolli and the minister of local government administration, Elbert Krasniqi, were the first customers at the newly opened Kosovo Post office in North Mitrovica.

During their visit, the ministers highlighted that, in addition to this new location, there are eight other Kosovo Post offices currently operating across the four northern municipalities and at the border with Serbia, the economy ministry said.

North Mitrovica’s mayor Erden Atic attended the opening of the new post office, along with representatives from the Post of Kosovo. The event drew protests from local Serbian citizens and members of the Serbian Democratic Party, who booed the speeches before leaving the area under police escort, according to confirmation from employees to Kosovo-online.

The new post office offers a range of services available throughout Kosovo, although sending and receiving parcels to Serbia remains unavailable due to the lack of an agreement between the Post of Kosovo and the Post of Serbia.

Petar Petkovic, director of the Serbian office for Kosovo, condemned the opening as an illegal and unilateral move by Pristina, calling it a violation of previous agreements between Belgrade and Pristina.

Petkovic said that postal services should be addressed through dialogue, as outlined in the 2013 telecommunications arrangement and the 2015 action plan on telecommunications.

Petkovic accused Kosovo’s prime minister, Albin Kurti, of disregarding agreements and using force to close Serbian postal offices, describing the new Kosovan post office as a "provocative act" that undermines ongoing negotiations.
