Thailand's parliament elected Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the daughter of billionaire tycoon and former leader Thaksin Shinawatra, as the country's new prime minister on August 16.

At 37, Paetongtarn becomes Thailand's youngest-ever prime minister and the second woman to hold the office, following her aunt Yingluck Shinawatra. Her appointment comes just two days after the dismissal of former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin by a constitutional court.

Both Thavisin and Paetongtarn are members of the Pheu Thai Party, which secured second place in the 2023 election but has since formed a ruling coalition.

Paetongtarn is the fourth member of the Shinawatra family to assume the role of prime minister in the past two decades. Her father Thaksin and aunt Yingluck, along with a previous Shinawatra prime minister, were all removed from office by military coups or constitutional court rulings. The circumstances of her selection highlight the limited power of elected governments in Thailand.
