The US State Department has approved the sale of over 300 Javelin missiles for an estimated $114mn, the Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said in a statement.

Bulgaria has requested to buy 218 Javelin FGM-148F missiles (includes four fly to buy missiles) and 107 Javelin Lightweight Command Launch Units (LWCLU). The deal also includes several other types of Javelin missiles.

Part of the deal is also training, including for maintenance of Javelin, technical assistance, other associated equipment and services, the DSCA said in the statement.

“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by helping to improve the security of a NATO Ally that is an important force for political and economic stability in Europe,” the DSCA noted in the statement.

It added that the acquisition of the Javelin missiles will boost Bulgaria’s long-term defence capacity, while the country will not have issues absorbing this equipment into its armed forces.

“The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region,” the DSCA noted.

The prime contractors will be the Javelin Joint Venture between Lockheed Martin and RTX Corporation.
