Uzbekistan’s light vehicle imports from China expanded by 4.5-fold in 7M23, according to the General Administration of Customs of China.
Uzbekistan imported 43,900 light vehicles from China in the period. In monetary terms, the imports grew 4.9 times to $589.5mn.
The average export price for one vehicle from China was $19,600.
Analysts will assess what share of the additional imports might be re-exported to Russia, where the automotive market is suffering from Western sanctions brought in as a response to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia as a result turned to middlemen in third markets to secure vehicles.
Kazakhstan has experienced a similar upsurge in light vehicle imports from China, with the suspicion that many are shipped onwards to Russia.
