Australia is set to construct the world’s largest solar power plant, a ground-breaking project named Power Link, which will generate enough electricity to power approximately 3mn homes.

The initiative, recently approved by the Australian government, will be undertaken by SunCable, a renewable energy company.

Located in Australia’s Northern Territory, the solar plant will cover an area of 12,000 hectares. This massive project is expected to bring more than $20bn in economic benefits to the region, creating an average of 6,800 direct and indirect jobs annually during the construction phase.

The workforce will peak at 14,300 jobs, with these figures based on the project's construction period and the first 35 years of operation.

Power Link is designed to produce 4 GW of electricity per hour for domestic consumption, with an additional 2 GW to be exported via submarine cable to Singapore, meeting about 15% of the city-state’s energy needs. The project will also feature a substantial battery storage capacity, allowing up to 40 GW to be stored.

The final investment decision for the Power Link project is expected in 2027, with electricity supply anticipated to begin in the early 2030s.
