Hungary's ruling party has submitted a bill to Parliament on April 2 that would grant the government the power to suspend the citizenship of individuals deemed a threat to national security or public order.

The draft law specifies that citizenship revocation would apply only to dual nationals who do not hold citizenship from an EU member state or EEA countries (Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Iceland).

The legislation comes two weeks after Prime Minister Viktor Orban's address on Hungary’s national holiday, where he called for spring cleansing of bedbugs, referring to political opponents, judges, journalists and civil activists.

The proposed law introduces a maximum revocation period of 10 years – a measure that is uncommon internationally, as citizenship removal is typically either permanent or based on voluntary renunciation.

Citizenship could be revoked if a person is found to be "working for a foreign power or organisation, advancing its objectives, or posing a threat to public order and security in Hungary."

Suspension of citizenship could be ordained on grounds of military service in foreign forces, supporting foreign entities, or involvement in terrorism.

The bill also empowers authorities to take swift action against individuals, with a 72-hour deadline, leaving little room for immediate legal recourse.

Fidesz has also announced plans to limit the operation of independent media, particularly by freezing foreign funding sources. According to information from VSquare, national security services are already working on investigating the financial background of affected media outlets. Radio Free Europe reports that authorities are thoroughly trying to uncover the financial sources of these media outlets.
