Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping publicly reaffirmed their nations’ “no limits” partnership during a phone call on January 20, shortly after Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 47th president of the United States.

The leaders discussed bilateral relations, focusing on trade and cultural exchange, and reiterated their strategic coordination. Putin described Xi as a "reliable partner," while Xi referred to Putin as his "dear friend."

“Chinese-Russian relations, based on eternal neighbourliness and friendship, comprehensive strategic collaboration, mutually beneficial cooperation and mutual benefits, are acquiring new vitality,” Xi said.

In the broadcasted portion of the call, the two avoided direct mention of Trump. However, Russian officials revealed that private discussions included Ukraine, Taiwan, and future engagement with the US under Trump’s administration.

"They discussed, naturally, the situation involving Ukraine and the relations of the two countries with the United States in the wake of the Trump administration coming to power in Washington," said Yury Ushakov, Putin’s foreign policy aide.

In the conversation, Putin emphasised the necessity of enhancing Russia-China cooperation, especially in trade and military matters, in response to external pressures. Xi advocated for elevated bilateral ties, pledging to safeguard shared interests and expand practical collaboration. Both leaders reaffirmed their shared goal of creating a multipolar world order.

On Ukraine, Putin reiterated Russia’s preference for a peace deal that aligns with its strategic interests, while Xi maintained China’s neutrality, criticising Western arms supplies to Kyiv. The Taiwan issue was also discussed, with Russia restating its support for Beijing’s One China policy, Ushakov said.

Putin has repeatedly expressed a cautious willingness to engage with the new US administration. The Russian leader, who has yet to speak directly with Trump since the inauguration, congratulated him on January 20, voicing optimism for renewed Moscow-Washington dialogue.

Xi, for his part, held a phone call with Trump prior to the inauguration, with the US leader describing the discussions as “very good.” Writing on Truth Social, Trump said the pair discussed trade, fentanyl, TikTok and other subjects.
