Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has been named one of the world’s 100 most influential leaders by Time Magazine in its annual list released on April 16. President al-Sharaa was included in the "Leaders" category, which recognises political figures shaping global affairs.

The American magazine described al-Sharaa as a “central figure in Syria’s recent political transformation.” It recalled that in December, opposition factions led by al-Sharaa ousted former president Bashar al-Assad.

Time Magazine added that “the soft-spoken al-Sharaa was once aligned with al-Qaeda and later with ISIS, but fought both fiercely to ensure the loyalty of his own fighters.” The magazine noted that he has recently forged alliances with other Syrian militants, secured Turkish support and established a religiously conservative de facto state in northwestern Syria that governed effectively and engaged with minority communities.

“To defeat Assad,” the magazine added, “the ambitious al-Sharaa realised he had to become a political leader as well as a military force.”

Notably, al-Sharaa’s profile in the Time 100 list was written by Robert Ford, the former US ambassador to Syria.

In its profile of the Syrian president, Time described him as a "pragmatic politician."

The list also included figures such as US President Donald Trump and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla.
