The United States is poised to significantly bolster its military support for Taiwan, with the inclusion of substantial funding and initiatives in the Fiscal Year 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), as reported by Focus Taiwan (CNA).

The NDAA proposes a $300mn package to provide Taiwan with critical military equipment and training. This includes anti-armor weapons, radars, drones, long-range precision fires, and potentially even anti-ship missiles. Additionally, the bill calls for the establishment of a joint program on military trauma care between the US and Taiwan, focusing on critical medical skills and mental health support.

Furthermore, the NDAA suggests inviting Taiwan to participate in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) military exercise in 2025, a major opportunity for Taiwan to enhance its interoperability with US and allied forces.

On a daily basis, Taiwan is now subject to Chinese intrustions of both Taiwanese air space and maritime regions. There is constant speculation as to whether or not President Xi will attempt to invade Taiwan to mark the 2027 centenary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army.

The proposed legislation also includes the BOLSTER Act, which outlines a coordinated response from the US and its allies in the event of a Chinese military attack or cyberattack on Taiwan. This measure underscores the growing US commitment to Taiwan's security and its determination to deter Chinese aggression.

The passage of the NDAA and the implementation of these provisions would mark a significant escalation in US support for Taiwan, signaling a stronger US stance against Chinese threats and a deeper commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
