Montenegro’s national security agency, ANB, is probing information about an alleged plot to assassinate President Jakov Milatovic, after receiving information from the country’s secret service, daily Vijesti reported on November 13.

Montenegro has received information from international sources that the main organiser of the plot was a former army officer from a neighbouring country, while the planned perpetrator was a Montenegrin citizen.

ANB has already heightened the security measures for Milatovic and claims the president is not in direct danger, Vijesti reported.

It added that the threat was officially confirmed by the president’s office in a written statement to the media.

“The office of the President of Montenegro has been informed that the credibility of information about a possible threat to the security of President Jakov Milatovic is being examined. We have not received any further details. We have been informed that the competent authorities have taken this into consideration and processing, and we are waiting for further information," Milatovic's public relations office wrote in a statement to Vijesti.

The police directorate confirmed to Vijesti it has received information about a possible threat to Milatovic but that his security was not threatened.

According to sources, the Montenegrin national security office received information about the possible assassination plot from two connected sources from two Western Balkan states.

“The people who provided the information are connected to the services of a country in the region. Given the way it has been said that this was allegedly planned, I am not sure about the credibility of the data, but everything needs to be verified,” one of the sources told Vijesti.

There was also no information about the possible motive for the assassination plot except that it could be an attempt to destabilise the country.

Vijesti also reported that the police and ANB had information about possible threats to top politicians, including former president and prime minister Milo Djukanovic, that turned out to be incorrect.
