Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti has been criticised by US envoy for special missions Richard Grenell, who questioned his reliability as a partner for the United States.
Grenell, who served as a special envoy for the Balkans under the previous Donald Trump administration, said that both the Trump and Biden administrations, as well as the EU and Nato, have criticised Kurti for taking unilateral actions that destabilise the region.
Grenell, writing on social media platform X, argued that Kurti’s claims of being close to the US and better than previous Kosovo governments are false.
“The Kurti government was not trustworthy during Trump’s first term, nor during Biden’s term. Both Republicans and Democrats have criticised Kurti consistently for taking unilateral actions that destabilise the region. So has the EU and Nato. The international community is united against Kurti,” Grenell wrote.
“Kurti has also been against every US idea offered by Presidents Clinton, Bush, Obama, Biden and Trump,” he stated.
Grenell also pointed out that while US companies are expanding in Albania and Serbia, they are not investing in Kosovo due to Kurti’s leadership.
“The rhetoric used by Kurti now, claiming he is close to the US and better than all previous Kosovo governments, is absolutely false. Don’t be fooled,” Grenell wrote.
"The Trump Administration has worked and will continue to work towards peace for everyone in the Balkans,” he added.
Tensions between Kosovo and Serbia remain high, with ongoing disputes over governance, security, and territorial integrity after Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008.
The international community continues to call for dialogue between the two countries to ease hostilities and prevent further escalation.
