US prosecutors in the criminal tax case against Hunter Biden have accused him of accepting payments from a Romanian businessman identified as G.P. who sought to "influence US government agencies" in connection with a criminal probe in Romania while his father, US President Joe Biden, was vice president.

According to ABC News  and Reuters, Biden allegedly took money from the Romanian oligarch Gabriel "Puiu" Popoviciu.

"The government will introduce the evidence that [Hunter Biden] and Business Associate 1 received compensation from a foreign principal who was attempting to influence US policy and public opinion and cause the United States to investigate the Romanian investigation of [Popoviciu] in Romania," prosecutors wrote in August 7's filing, according to ABC News.

American prosecutors claim that a company controlled by Popoviciu hired Hunter Biden to help him get rid of corruption charges in Romania. Popoviciu was convicted of corruption in 2017 in the case called Ferma Băneasa, but he fled to England, where the judiciary refused to extradite him. Later, in 2024, Popoviciu escaped conviction after using an extraordinary way of attack.

The US Department of Justice made this statement in a file filed August 7 at the federal court in Los Angeles, where the son of US President Joe Biden will be tried on September 9 for tax evasion. He pleaded not guilty.
