A court in Turkey on April 24 ordered the detention of Yigit Gokcehan Kocoglu (@ygokcehank), lawyer to Mehmet Pehlivan (@mehmettpehlivan), according to a tweet by Pehlivan, a lawyer of jailed Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.
Lately, Pehlivan was himself detained but was eventually released.
Working on behalf of 35 dead children
On the day of the detention order, Kocoglu was in Adiyaman in southeastern Turkey to attend a court hearing on the collapse of Isias Hotel during the February 2023 earthquake catastrophe.
Kocoglu is representing the families of 35 children who were killed in the hotel collapse. The children were players in a college volleyball team from Northern Cyprus that was participating in a tournament in Adiyaman.
In a tweeted response, Kocoglu said he attended courthouses every day and that the judge could have invited him for questioning rather than issuing a detention order.
Black humour, but they've no time to get the joke
If the Erdogan regime was not busy murdering children (see past articles on how shoddy buildings have been allowed to proliferate in Turkey's earthquake zones), it would actually have time for a good sense of humour, providing it an opportunity to enjoy ‘lawyer-ception’ jokes.
Tweet: On March 30, SZC TV asked "Is it the turn of the lawyer of Imamoglu’s lawyer [for detention]?". Kocoglu did not miss the opportunity for an ‘Avukatception’ (lawyer-ception) joke.
In addition to Kocoglu, Serkan Gunel (@serkangunel) and Kazim Yigit Akalin, lawyers to Imamoglu’s press secretary Murat Ongun (also in jail), were also detained.
Massacres and jailed lawyers, a lifestyle
For more black humour in lawyer stories, see how two lawyers of miners who lost their lives in the Soma massacre, Selcuk Kozagacli and Can Atalay, are in custody.
All of the owners of the mine along with the other perpetrators have been released.
Moreover, Atalay was elected as an MP in May 2023. He has legal immunity. Keeping him in jail is against all kinds of local and international legislation as well as the rulings of local and international courts. But keep him in jail, the Erdogan regime does.
