Up to 179 people have been killed following the crash of a Jeju Air passenger plane at South Korea’s Muan airport.

According to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency quoting fire services at the scene “All on board except two rescued presumed killed in Muan plane accident.”

South Korean firefighting authorities had initially put the death toll at 62 before increasing it to 85 as reports also emerged of two survivors being pulled from the wreckage. Both are believed to be female crew members.

Reports from the scene refer to a malfunction in the landing gear during the landing process. No landing gear was visible as the aircraft skidded down the runway. This was possibly caused by a bird-strike according to the same firefighting authorities, and led to the aircraft veering off the runway before bursting into flames after it crashed into what appeared to be a wall or earthen bank. The crash occurred at 0907 local time.

Yonhap has also said that Korea’s acting president, Choi-Sang-mok has ordered “all out efforts for rescue operations” at the site.

Sources point to the aircraft manifest containing 181 names with the majority being South Koreans returning from Thailand. At least two Thai nationals are also thought to have been on board. It is believed to be Jeju Air's first fatal accident since the budget airline was established almost 20 years ago.
