India's NTPC announced on January 22 plans for a 50-MW solar installation in Sri Lanka. This venture is a 50:50 partnership with the Ceylon Electricity Board, as reported by the Press Trust of India. The joint entity, Trincomalee Power Company Limited (TPCL), will develop the facility in Sampoor, Trincomalee.

After discussions with Sri Lankan parties, the tariff for the initial 50MW (with potential expansion to 120MW) has been agreed at $0.0597 per unit, according to NTPC.

This initiative will enhance Sri Lanka's renewable energy capacity, diversifying its energy sources and lessening reliance on traditional fuels, the company said. NTPC, operating under India's Power Ministry, is the nation's largest electricity producer.

Separately, NTPC disclosed that a 25MW portion of the 200-MW Gujarat Solar PV Project in Sadla in the Indian state of Gujarat, operated by NTPC Renewable Energy (a subsidiary of NTPC via NTPC Green Energy Limited), began commercial operation on January 17.

A previous 37.5MW segment commenced operations on December 21, 2024. This brings the NTPC group's total installed and operational capacity to 76733.18MW.
