Iran’s UN ambassador Saeed Iravani has rejected accusations made by France, Britain and the United States regarding the Islamic Republic’s involvement in the Ukraine war.

In a letter to the President of the Security Council and the UN Secretary General on September 4, Iravani said the allegations are “misleading, completely unfounded and hereby categorically rejected.”

During the UNSC’s open briefing on August 30, the representatives of the three Western countries accused Iran of supplying arms to Russia in its war on Ukraine, linking their claims to the UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which restricts the development and transfer of ballistic missiles by Iran.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran views these allegations as merely the narrow and short-sighted political agendas of these three permanent members of the Council, aimed at advancing their own political interests,” the UN ambassador said in the letter.

He said such claims are both “ironic and hypocritical” by countries that are directly involved in the Ukraine conflict and significantly contributing to its escalation through the supply of advanced weaponry.

The provision of Western arms and advanced weaponry has prolonged the war in Ukraine, according to Iravani but made no mention of Iranian drones and rockets being used currently by Russia in its war with Ukraine.

The ambassador also said Resolution 2231 has nothing to do with the Ukraine conflict, and the two were being conflated. Resolution 2231 endorses Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal and sets out a detailed inspection process and schedule, aiming to ensure that Iran's nuclear program remains exclusively peaceful.

It also includes specific restrictions on Iran's ballistic missile programme and arms transfers, which are intended to prevent the development and proliferation of nuclear-capable missiles.

Western countries have accused Iran of supplying drones to Russia, which Iranian officials have denied, saying a limited number had been sold to Moscow before the onset of the Ukraine war.

Recent reports, however, claim that Iran is set to deliver ballistic missiles to Russia soon.

“Any allegations suggesting Iran's involvement in the sale, export, or transfer of arms in violation of its international commitments to the Russian Federation are entirely baseless and categorically rejected,” Iravani said in the letter.
