Israel's air force struck what it said was a Hezbollah rocket storage facility in southern Lebanon on November 28, as both sides accused each other of violating a day-old ceasefire meant to halt more than a year of cross-border fighting, Intellinews Beirut bureau learned.

The strike near Baysariyah, north of the Litani River, marked the first Israeli air raid since the US and French-brokered truce took effect on November 27 morning.

Israel also reported firing on "suspects" with vehicles in several areas of the southern zone, calling it a breach of the deal.

In interviews with the Lebanese military, a general who asked not to be named did not know about the breach and said it would be immediately investigated, Intellinews learned.

“The Israelis are dealing on the ground as if this is a truce, not a ceasefire,” he said. “This requires caution and could lead to a deterioration of the situation and the failure of the agreement in less than 60 days”, the military official added.

Lebanese media reported “New artillery shelling on the town of Aita al-Shaab” late on November 28.

Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah countered that Israel was violating the agreement by "attacking those returning to the border villages."

Lebanese state media reported that Israeli tank fire hit five towns and agricultural fields within 2 km of the border, wounding at least two people.

The 60-day ceasefire requires Israeli forces to withdraw from southern Lebanon but allows them to restrict movement south of the Litani River between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. The deal aims to end the deadliest confrontation between the sides in years.

The fighting has killed 3,961 people in Lebanon and injured 16,520 since October 2023, according to the Lebanese health ministry. Israeli authorities say 45 civilians and 73 soldiers have died from Hezbollah strikes.

Some 60,000 evacuated Israelis have yet to return to their northern homes.

Hezbollah, which has been weakened by casualties and leadership losses, says its fighters "remain fully equipped" and will monitor Israel's withdrawal "with their hands on the trigger."

US President Joe Biden, who announced the Lebanon accord on November 28, said he would now push for a Gaza ceasefire, where Israel has been less focused on stopping the fighting.
