Over half of Ukrainians now support negotiations to end the war with Russia, marking a significant shift in public sentiment as the conflict surpasses its 1,000th day, according to Gallup polls released on November 19.

The surveys, conducted in August and October 2024, found that 52% of Ukrainians want their government to negotiate a peace settlement, while 38% prefer continuing the military campaign until victory. A further 9% were undecided or declined to comment.

The findings reveal a notable change in attitudes since the war began in February 2022. Shortly after the invasion, 73% of Ukrainians supported continuing the fight. By 2023, this figure had dropped to 63%, with 27% favouring negotiations.

Gallup noted that support for prolonged military action dipped below 50% nationwide in 2024, with the most significant declines in regions far from the front lines.

Additionally, 52% of respondents indicated a willingness for Kyiv to consider some territorial concessions as part of a ceasefire agreement, while 38% opposed this, and 10% remained uncertain.

The poll highlights the toll of the protracted conflict on Ukrainian society. The early months of the invasion saw strong unity and resolve to resist Russian aggression, but as the war drags on, economic and social pressures appear to have tempered public opinion.

Gallup conducted the poll among 1,000 respondents per survey each year. The margin of error was 3%.
