Ahmad al-Sharaa, the leader of the New Syrian Administration and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Asaad Al-Shaibani, met with a delegation from the Arab League led by Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary-General and Personal Representative of the Secretary-General of the Arab League, reported by Alsharq Alawsat on January 18.

Al-Shaibani said he looks forward to Syria's return to the Arab League, as the country’s new Turkish-backed seek to establish a foothold in the region's political landscape.

For his part, the Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League clarified that the issue of Syria's rejoining the Arab League is both technical and political. He further explained that the Arab League does not involve itself in recognising governments; instead, member states appoint representatives to attend its meetings.

"Syria's seat was frozen until 2023 when the freeze was lifted, and that decision remains in effect, meaning Syria's participation in League meetings is permitted.", Zaki added.

Syria's seat was frozen until 2023. The readmission to the Arab League at that time was made during the former Assad regime. With the new administration now in place, the authorities will have to reapply and complete certain procedures. Nevertheless, Syria is allowed to participate in League meetings based on the 2023 decision.

Zaki clarified that he had been assigned the visit by Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit to gain a deeper understanding of the new Syrian administration. He pointed out that these discussions would serve as the foundation for a report on Syria's situation, which would be presented to all member states.

Zaki stressed that Syria is a key and influential Arab country, and its security is crucial to the stability of the entire Arab world.

Meanwhile, Asaad al-Shibani expressed Syria's desire to strengthen cooperation with Arab League members in various fields, particularly in reconstruction, energy, and infrastructure. He appreciated the Arab states' steadfast commitment to Syria's territorial integrity and called for their contribution to rebuilding Syria.

He also highlighted Syria’s readiness to facilitate Arab investments to boost the economy and improve living standards. Al-Shibani stressed Syria's ambition to enhance the Arab role and positions after its absence for 14 years, noting the support and goodwill Syria received from Arab countries, particularly during the Riyadh conference.
