Pakistan-Afghanistan transit trade drops 59% in FY2023-24

The Pakistan-Afghan transit trade saw a 59% y/y decline in FY2023-24, dropping to $2.9bn, largely due to Pakistan's anti-smuggling campaign and import restrictions, The Nation reported on August 27.

Bilateral trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan decreased by 12% during FY2023-24, mainly driven by a 40% reduction in imports of Afghan products, according to an official source cited by The Nation. However, Pakistan's exports to Afghanistan showed consistent growth, with a 12% increase during this period.

During FY2023-24, Pakistan's exports to Afghanistan were valued at $59.11mn. In the ongoing FY2024-25, these exports have surged by 75%, reaching $103.52mn.

On the imports side, data indicates that in FY2023-24, Pakistan's imports from Afghanistan totalled $40.87mn. In FY2024-25, this figure decreased by 8% to $37.67mn.

In July 2024, the total bilateral trade volume between Pakistan and Afghanistan reached $141.18mn, representing a 41% increase from the $99.98mn recorded in July 2023. The trade volume also rose by 45% m/m, up from $97.43mn in June 2024.

In July 2024, Pakistan's exports to Afghanistan amounted to $103.52mn, marking a 75% y/y increase.
