Slovenian company Telekom Slovenije, in partnership with global safety solutions provider Intersec, is set to launch a nationwide emergency alert system to enhance public safety, Intersec announced on December 17.

Financed by the European Union and the Republic of Slovenia, the system complies with the EU mandate outlined in the European Electronic Communications Code.

The system will use cell broadcast technology to ensure everyone in a specific geographic area is reached during emergencies, regardless of internet access or app usage. Marko Stosicki, Telekom Slovenije’s project lead, stated, “By modernising our alert system, Slovenia becomes more resilient and better prepared for future crises.”

The initiative follows Slovenia’s devastating floods in August 2023, which affected two-thirds of the country. The Ministry of Digital Transformation emphasised the goal of reaching all individuals, including Slovenia’s 2.1mn residents and 6.2mn annual tourists.

Intersec's expertise, proven in Croatia and Austria, played a key role in its selection. The alert system will be hosted and managed by Telekom Slovenije, integrating efforts from other national mobile operators.

In practice, Intersec Public Warning provides an integrated solution to reduce disaster risks by enabling authorities to create alerts and disseminate them effectively using the national telecom infrastructure, ensuring coverage for everyone within a geographic area.
