Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has urged the development of a new national energy master plan prioritising renewable energy and eliminating the influence of the fossil fuel lobby, according to a report by Dhaka Tribune.

The call was made during a human chain demonstration at Manik Mia Avenue, near the National Parliament Building on January 26, marking International Clean Energy Day 2025. Protesters demanded the cancellation of the current energy master plan, which remains reliant on fossil fuels.

Dr Iftekharuzzaman, TIB's Executive Director, stated that the power structure of the corrupt, authoritarian and exploitative government was built upon the interests of both domestic and foreign lobbies, which had the policy framework hostage. He added that dependency on fossil fuels has been deliberately maintained to serve these interests, obstructing the transition to renewable energy.

To create a framework free from the fossil fuel lobby, he called on the interim government to involve independent experts and stakeholders in developing a phased roadmap aimed at achieving 100% renewable electricity generation by 2050.

TIB observed International Clean Energy Day for the first time this year, with activities across the country under the theme "Clean Energy: A Sustainable Future." The organisation also outlined key recommendations for the energy sector.

These include the immediate cancellation of the fossil fuel-reliant “Integrated Energy and Power Master Plan (IEPMP-2023)” and the adoption of a plan focused on renewable energy expansion. It called for the establishment of an independent oversight body to ensure accountability and eliminate conflicts of interest in energy sector decision-making.

The organisation also recommended rigorous monitoring of environmental impact assessments for all energy projects, ensuring transparency and adherence to environmental regulations. Strengthening the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA) by granting it autonomy and enhancing its technical and infrastructural capabilities was also highlighted.
