Rescue officials recovered five more bodies on March 31 from the rubble of a collapsed 30-storey building in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district, bringing the death toll to 13 following the March 28 earthquake in Myanmar, The Nation reported.
The disaster has left nine people injured, while 74 remain missing, authorities said. The under-construction building, belonging to the State Audit Office (SAO), collapsed on the afternoon of March 28 after an 8.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Mandalay, Myanmar, approximately 392 km from Thailand’s Mae Hong Son province.
Bangkok Deputy Governor Tavida Kamolvej said the city’s search and rescue operation, now in its fourth day, uncovered the bodies under the debris but was able to retrieve only one so far. “Officials will clear the area on Tuesday to remove large debris from the upper part of the rubble and arrange it properly,” she said. “This will allow the evidence collection team and officials from the Ministry of Industry to gather information on the collapsed building.”
Meanwhile, the Mental Health Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team (MCATT) is providing psychological support to the families of the construction workers, who include both Thai and Myanmar nationals. Many have set up camp and are staying overnight at a shelter centre near the site.
After visiting the scene on Monday, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said rescue teams, including international experts, K9 units, and robots, are working to gain access to areas beneath the rubble where workers are believed to be trapped. “Seventy-two hours have passed, and we continue to move forward, not giving up or stopping, with hope,” Chadchart said. “The BMA and related officials are standing by to provide any support that the rescue teams need.”
Rescue efforts remain ongoing.
